Save the date for the 4th VPL-Biennale in Iceland: Building a common ground
Validation of prior learning for integrated approaches in lifelong learning
VPL Biennale in Reykjavik, Iceland
May 18-20, 2022

The 4th VPL Biennale is about validation of prior learning in different contexts and pathways of work and life. As a participant, you will be able to explore various validation processes and support measures, and learn from the results achieved around the world.
Postponed is not abandoned: South Africa likely host of the 5th VPL-Biennale
The participants of the 3rd VPL Biennale could see with which enthusiasm our South African colleagues were willing to take on the 4th VPL-Biennale, taking the event outside Europe for the first time. Unfortunately the Covid-Crisis hit the country particularly hard and the host organization SAQA had to lay the plans for organizing the upcoming Biennale as well as the symbolic batton handed over in Berlin on ice.

And that’s exactly where our friends from the Education and Training Service Centre (ETSC) in Reykjavik picked it up. SAQA’s interest in hosting a VPL-Biennale, however, is unbroken. So we strongly hope that after the global recovery from the Covid-Crisis, the 5th Biennale goes to Cape Town.
Good things come to those who wait: VPL-Book Nr. 7 “Making policy work” published
The adoption of the Berlin Declaration on Validation of Prior Learning was a milestone for the VPL Community of Practice. Four editors and 52 authors have worked hard to support this benchmark document with concrete examples of good practice and good policy from all of the seven tracks of the conference.

Summarizing the highlights of the 3rd VPL Biennale, the book also includes the three VPL-prize winners as well as strategic perspectives by the editors and invited contributors. Please spread the free download link in your networks and if you like, obtain a hard copy in Reykjavik.

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened: Goodbye from Gütersloh!
Hosting the 3rd VPL-Biennale was a hell of a ride. I will never forget the energy flowing among this strong and warm community striving for the greater good.

We collected so many unforgettable memories, from the marvellous co-creation and final adoption of the Berlin Declaration to the amazing party at the Bertelsmann Repräsentanz, Unter den Linden 1 and the spectacular VPL-Prize awarding ceremony.

All of this I could never have done alone. A super big “Thank you!” thus goes to the Biennale Committee 2019. Most of all to Ruud Duvekot for starting this journey in 2014 and for making sure the torch is handed over again and again so that the promise of validation can shine an ever brighter light of empowerment, especially to disadvantaged learners.

As well as to Anni Karttunen for being a living validation encyclopedia, my co-host, and my friend. Finally, to everyone here at Bertelsmann Stiftung, who made this journey possible. I had the best team ever. Thank you! All that is left to say now, is “Good luck!” to the ETSC team for another wonderful VPL-Biennale and see you all in Reykjavik next year!

Yours, Martin Noack
