An integrated approach to VPL advice

Support and advice for applicants for validation of prior learning (VPL) procedures in Switzerland
This workshop presents the forms of support and advice of applicants for validation of prior learning (VPL) procedures, in initial vocational education and training (IVET) in Switzerland. In this context, the VPL procedures are integrated into a flexible program for the promotion of certification procedures for adults, especially addressed to low-qualified adults. In this program two levels of advising are proposed:
- During the initial information and advising phase that let knows adults about the possibilities of having access to IVET qualification procedures. In this phase, advising is not limited to VPL applicants, but is open to any adult wishing to obtain a qualification (either a first or a second qualification, given the evolution in the world of work). This form of advice is transversal to any procedure to get an IVET qualification.
- During the tutoring of the applicants’ elaboration of their VPL portfolio. In this phase, the advisers support the applicants: i) in describing their own experience in order to make it visible (by using “explicitation methods" inspired from the francophone practices of activity analysis), ii) in relating the experience to the competency profile of the formal qualification.

PhD, Senior Lecturer, Advisor and Senior Researcher on VNIL, at Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (SFIVET) from 2001, and associated member at Research laboratory "CRAFT" of University of Geneva from 2006. Her PhD thesis concerns the information and advising in VNIL. Responsible for the national report on the validation VNIL practices in Switzerland (2012) and for the European inventory CH country report of VNIL (2014, 2016 and 2018). Responsible for research projects and training on the advisors and evaluators in the VNIL (from 2005).
Representative of Switzerland/SFIVET in many VNIL European projects: Women in SMES (2013-2015); PEIRA (2009-2011); RPLO (2010); Interreg VALID.O (2008-2009); scientific consultant for the Socrates Dewblam Project (2005‐2006). Expert member of Swiss Platform of VNIL (2005‐2007). Scientific consultant and teacher in many projects of VNIL in the Higher Education in Switzerland and Italy. More generally, her research focuses on lifelong guidance and work based learning, related to anticipatory dynamics, the mimetic and imaginative dimensions of learning, and the semiological analysis of the activity that articulates the enactive perspective and the semiotics of Peirce.
